Abstract In timber structures, knowledge of the splitting capacity beams loaded perpendicular to grain by dowel-type connections is primordial importance since brittle failure can occur. present work, single- and double-dowel-type following different edged distance arrangements are experimentally investigated derive behaviour Eucalyptus globulus L., which a hardwood species increasing interest for structural use due its high mechanical performance, fast growth, good natural durability. The correlation experimental loads with those theoretically predicted expression included in Eurocode 5 eight analytical models based on an energetic approach discussed. Most studied overpredict capacity. However, code expression, derived from softwoods, proves be very conservative predicting eucalyptus load.
